    Other forms and stages

If your programme needs a different form or stage, say so in the enquiry and we will confirm what is possible for your season.

Callus first, then roots

Every Dogridge plant at Motke starts as a cane section that spends about three weeks in a callusing chamber before it goes anywhere near a propagation bed. Callus is the tissue roots grow from, and a base that has callused all the way round sends out roots from every side, not from one edge of a fresh cut.

Ask us for photographs of the callus and root base of the current season's plants before you order.

  • Three weeks in the chamber

Cane sections are held in callusing chambers for about 21 days. Only canes with a fully formed callus are planted.

  • Roots from every side

A callused base roots all round, so the plant leaves the nursery with roots spread around the cane instead of clustered on one side.

  • A stronger start in the vineyard

More roots reach more soil. The young vine can take up more of the water and nutrition you give it, and that root system is the foundation the vineyard stands on.

Planning your season

Rootstock demand is seasonal. Motke dispatches more than 20 lakh Dogridge plants a season and grows the quantity every year. Repeat customers and agents share their requirements early, and quantities and dispatch dates are planned together. Tell us your planting timing and we will discuss what is possible.

Suitability for your soil, variety and grafting plan is a decision for you and your agronomist. Motke does not publish performance figures.
